Getting the Most Out of Our Sessions Together!
As we begin to work together on the issues that are causing stress and confusion in your life, there are some things you can do to attain the greatest results for yourself. These have worked for my private clients, and 100s of others I know, who practice self-inquiry regularly: 1. Arrive Prepared -- this usually means coming to our sessions with a completed Judge-Your-Neighbor Worksheet (JYNW), and doing the Follow Up assignments you were offered in your last session. Download a Judge-Your-Neighbor Worksheet here 2. Arrive On Time -- if you need to reschedule an upcoming session, please let me know at least 24 hours in advance, so I can use your time slot for another client. If you have an emergency situation, please let me know as soon as possible (even if after your session). If you are simply arriving late to a session, and have not attempted to contact me, I can not guarantee that you will get a "full" session (75 minutes) that day. If you are not honest, I can not guarantee that you will experience the results you desire. Sometimes it may be scary or even physically painful to speak your truth, and I invite you to step into that scary place, and meet yourself with compassion. Here's a wonderful poem by Rumi that has helped me to notice every thought (even the scary ones) as support: Read The Guest House 4. Self-Inquiry is Meditation -- The Work of Byron Katie is meditative self-inquiry. THERE ARE 3 MAIN PARTS TO THE WORK: a) IDENTIFICATION ...of the cause of your stress, i.e, the stressful thoughts you're attaching to in the moment. Writing a Judge-Your-Neighbor-Worksheet, re-live the experience of the situation you are writing about. Become open to re-experiencing the emotions you were feeling at the time of the situation. For example, if you were 5 years old at the time, write from the perspective of yourself as a 5-year old. Hold yourself in the situation, mentally, and answer each question on the JYN worksheet from the perspective of yourself re-living that stressful moment/situation. b) SELF-INQUIRY Facilitation of The Work is also meditation. Answer the questions from the "heart" - your innermost wisdom, not the intellect. Would you rather be "right" or honest? Contemplate! Whenever I ask you one of the 4 Questions of The Work, I am inviting you to walk down a path that can lead you back home to your true nature, your "authentic self". Until now, you have been blindly making assumptions around the situations that are stressing you out. Self-Inquiry offers the opportunity to question these assumptions - to discover what is true for YOU - not what the rest of the world would agree on mindlessly. My job is to support you on your journeys inward, and to hold you to inquiry when the ego attempts to lure you elsewhere. 5) Get Comfortable! To best support yourself during our sessions, find a quiet, comfortable place, free of distractions. For instance, driving while doing a session is not the best idea (especially if I ask you to close your eyes and visualize something). I recommend silencing your cell phone ringer and other electronic devices that "Beep", and do your best to prevent other distractions (dogs barking, etc.). If you hear background noise on my end, which you find distracting, PLEASE let me know immediately, so I can adjust my environment for you! Phone Please use a headset with your phone, to ensure the most audio clarity for our sessions. Please do not use your speaker phone, as it usually can involve an echo, or be difficult to hear clearly. Skype If you want to meet via Skype, a headset works best to prevent background noise. Each week, I will invite you to participate in a customized, Authentic Living exercise (i.e., your "homework" for the week). These assignments are designed to support you to fully live out your self-discoveries, as your stressful belief system melts away. Not without a fight! I find that when people shed a deeply-held identity, the ego's next attempt to keep them attached to their fears, is to move into approval-seeking mode. Fears of rejection, not being "good enough" or "smart enough", not being lovable, etc. often creep in, and take the spotlight. These alluring moments of fear are your opportunities to deliberately CHOOSE PEACE in your life! Your Authentic Living exercises are designed specifically to support YOU in your situation, and this often involves communication - with yourself or others - including improving your listening skills (even when criticized!), and speaking your truth (saying "No" when you really mean it, etc.). You also receive email support from me, even 14 days after we end our coaching relationship! Please use this liberally, to send me your homework assignments, ask questions about The Work, etc. ====== Confidentiality Policy Our sessions together are completely confidential. This means that without your direct, written consent, I will not speak with anyone about any identifying details of our conversations.
